EXPLORE and PLAN Testing

On November 20th all 8th graders will be taking the EXPLORE test and all 10th graders will be taking the PLAN test.  Both of these tests are pretests to the ACT.  They test on the same material of the ACT test. The ACT test is a test required to enter a 4 year college and is typically taken in your junior year of high school.

The thing I like best about these tests is that it takes your test answers and combines them with an interest inventory on the test and gives you an idea of careers and college majors that you would enjoy as well as be good at doing.  I find this test to be very accurate of your abilities and interests (as long as you take the test seriously, of course!).  In addition, the test will give you an idea that if you continue what you are doing academically, what you could receive as a score on the ACT test.

If you have any questions about these tests, feel free to contact me.

Help with Funding College

This is an article taken from this web page. Go to this web page for the direct link needed to get connected.

MTV, Get Schooled and the College Board have launched “My College Dollars,” a Facebook application that utilizes information from a user’s Facebook profile – including age, gender and state – to connect students with targeted financial aid opportunities.

The My College Dollars Facebook App integrates the media and messengers that students turn to most for information. It takes advantage of the world’s largest social media platform to meet students where they already spend a lot of time. The app helps them connect with information, guidance and tools that will enable them to make smart decisions about paying for college. The tool is integrated into a larger campaign to encourage college preparation and FAFSA completion, taking place within hundreds of high schools across the country.

To promote the use of My College Dollars, music artists, actors and athletes will inspire students and inform them about the campaign.

My College Dollars:
  • Connects students with the nearly $6 billion in available scholarship aid and $45 billion in federal and state grants.
  • Uses information from a user’s Facebook profile to connect him or her to relevant financial aid opportunities.
  • Features video tutorials from talent and other influential experts on how to get the financial aid students need.
  • Connects to existing social networks for support, guidance and sharing and tracking each other’s progress.
  • Integrates a calendar to help students track important dates and milestones.
  • Features a dynamic “Ask the Experts” FAQ, in which selected user questions will be answered by a panel of experts on a regular basis.

Financial Aid Night: MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The following is an email I received from the director of financial aid at the College of St. Benedict:

Hello, high school counselors-

I write to invite your students to this year’s financial aid night at the College of Saint Benedict.

My goal is to inform your seniors and their parents about the financial aid application process and the types of financial aid that may be available to them.   As you will recall, this is a general financial aid presentation – not a Saint Ben’s/Saint John’s program.  The event is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Monday, January 14, 2013 and will take place on the CSB campus in Gorecki Center.

If you are interested in having seniors and their parents from your high school invited, please send labels with the students’ home address to Kari Schroeder, CSB financial aid office coordinator, at the following address:  College of Saint Benedict, Financial Aid Office, 37 South College Avenue, St. Joseph, MN  56374.

Thank you, and let me know if you have any questions.

Stuart Perry

Executive Director of Financial Aid
College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

So....make sure you mark this date on your calendar and are keeping your eyes open for a letter from the College of St. Benedict in your mail sometime in December.

Also, there are four scholarships listed on the right side of this web site under "Scholarships" - make sure you are checking this web site periodically for updated scholarships.

Senior Meeting

With the first week come and gone, semester 1 schedule changes are out of the way and now it is time to focus on the seniors!

Today I am meeting with the entire senior class to discuss their senior year.  They will receive a copy of their transcript, the same transcript any college they apply to will receive.  This gives them an opportunity to see the same information as the college and to address any concerns they may have about their transcript.  I will talk with them about applying to colleges, taking appropriate college prep tests, visiting a college, financial aid, scholarships, etc.  It's an excellent time for them to ask questions and set up meeting times with me.

They will be given a packet of information, so if you are a parent of a senior, ask to see this packet and discuss the meeting with them.  It's important to continue to stay on track with the senior year and you as parents can assist with that.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me!

Monday, August 13, 2012

Need to Change your Schedule?

If you need to change your schedule, you will need to fill out the schedule change form located by clicking here.  If you need to know what classes are offered and the hours they are offered, click here.

All TA, Office Aide, and Work Release forms will be put on this web site when I return to my office on August 28th.  Check back then if you need one of these forms.

Enjoy your last few weeks of summer break!

Requesting Final Transcripts

Wow, it's the senior's last week!  This spring has flew by, I think it's been the early nice weather.

I have put an announcement out for all seniors regarding the request of final transcripts.  I wanted to put it on here as well as I know some students don't always get to hear the announcements.

FINAL HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS: Bring a note to Audrey with your name and the name and address of the college(s) you would like to receive your HS transcript.

FINAL M STATE FERGUS FALLS TRANSCRIPTS: There is a form in the guidance office through Friday that you would need to fill out if you would like a transcript of your final college credits through Fergus Falls sent to your college(s).  After Friday you will need to use this link.

FINAL FDLTCC TRANSCRIPTS: You will receive a copy of the transcript request form in your foreign languages course.  These college credits from FDLTCC are only if you took Spanish 3 / 4 and/or German 3 / 4.  If you misplaced it, it can be found here.

Any questions, contact me.  Happy LAST week, seniors!

April Already!

Wow, the year is flying right on by! Most of the local scholarships are due either today or sometime this week. Be sure you are checking out all of the scholarships available on the right side under scholarships. Some new ones were even added last week.

Juniors, next week Saturday, April 14th, is one of the two ACT test dates that are offered at Melrose HS. At this point it sounds like if you have not signed up but still want to test via the stand by option, there will be room. If you haven't signed up and don't plan to take the April test, make sure to sign up for the June 9th test offered at Melrose HS.

It's fun to see all of the seniors' plans out in the senior hallway! Starting the end of this month I will start meeting with interested juniors to help them with their first steps towards picking and applying to a college as their senior year is not too far off!

Have a good (short) week!

Monday, March 12, 2012

What's Going on?

Last week and this week I have been meeting with all of the seniors. This is a time for them to ask any questions they may have about financial aid and applying for scholarships. It is important for seniors and parents to complete the FAFSA as most colleges will start sending out financial aid packages this week. The longer you wait to complete your FAFSA the less money there is available.

As you can tell there are A LOT of scholarships (on the right side of this web site) that are just for Melrose seniors. I have been telling the seniors about these scholarships, hopefully they will take the time to apply for this free money!

Lastly, on Thursday I will be giving the practice ACT writing test to all 10th graders. It is optional, so if you are a 10th grader and are not planning to go to a 2 or 4 year college you will need to fill out the letter that was sent home with you to be exempt. This is a good opportunity to learn about what you need to work on with your writing. Your 11th grade English teacher will be using the scores to best help you in your 11th grade English class.

I know I sound like a broken record, but be sure you are checking out the local scholarships for Melrose seniors on the right side of this blog. It looks like there are 26 LOCAL scholarships (and many more non-local scholarships). See me if you have any problems printing any of the applications off.

Local Scholarships are rolling in!

SENIORS!!!
Make sure you are checking out the local scholarships on the right under scholarships. I added quite a few today. Keep watching and apply, apply, apply!

A Message from Mr. Doetkott

February 13, 2012

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian:

It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Craig Wiechmann, a senior in our school. Craig died from injuries suffered in a farm accident that occurred Saturday afternoon.

The funeral will be held at St. Rosa of Lima Church in St. Rosa on Wednesday 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at St. Rosa of Lima Church in St. Rosa during the hours of 4-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 hour prior to the funeral. The school will provide bussing for students that would like to attend the funeral. Students not taking the bus, but wanting to attend the funeral are encouraged to attend with their parents.

Students will have varied reactions to the death of a peer. Any reaction is normal in the grief process and can range from withdrawal, to crying and anger. I encourage you to openly discuss with your child their reactions and feelings regarding the death of Craig. Special counseling services have been made available to students today and will continue to be available throughout the week and longer, if needed.

If you think your child needs additional counseling support, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Dusha or Ms. Nietfeld, counselor and social worker at 320-256-4224.

Sincerely,

Chad Doetkott, HS Principal
