Updated Admissions Requirements

Did you know if you wanted to attend the University of MN (Morris, Rochester, Duluth or Twin Cities) that you will need to have four (4) years of high school math (Algebra I and higher) in order to apply?  This is important information if you were planning to take only the required three (3) years of math in order to graduate.  This is likely to start a trend of what will become the norm for many four year colleges.  You can read more about this new requirement by clicking here.

Seniors, Now is the Time!

As mentioned in an earlier post, October is College Knowledge Month!  Did you know that many of the MN State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU) are offering the opportunity to apply during October for FREE?!  That means this is the time to apply to many of the MNSCU schools you may be interested in.  That is a savings of $20 per application.  To do this, you just would do the online application (preferred method) and just DO NOT submit the application fee.

For a list of all of the colleges that are part of MNSCU that will accept no payment this month, click here.

See me with any questions.

Seniors: Financial Aid Night Set

Every year there is a Financial Aid night for seniors and their parents held by the MN Office of Higher Education on the campus of the College of St. Benedict.  This is only HELD at the college, it is not affiliated with the college.  I hope you will all plan to attend.  Here is the information I received, please watch for an invitation in the mail (sometime in December) that will come with a return address as the College of St. Benedict, so don't throw it out!

Hello, high school counselors-

I write to invite your students to this year’s financial aid night at the College of Saint Benedict.

My goal is to inform your seniors and their parents about the financial aid application process and the types of financial aid that may be available to them.   As you will recall, this is a general financial aid presentation – not a Saint Ben’s/Saint John’s program.  The event is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Monday, January 26 and will take place on the CSB campus in Gorecki Center.

If you are interested in having seniors and their parents from your high school invited to the program, please send labels with the students’ home address to Kari Schroeder, CSB Financial Aid Office Coordinator, at the following address:  College of Saint Benedict, Financial Aid Office, 37 South College Avenue, St. Joseph, MN  56374.

Thank you, and let me know if you have any questions.

"Study Abroad" Opportunity

I received this information from the travel coordinator at the MN Zoo a couple of days ago.  This is a great opportunity for students interested in careers working with animals through zoology, Vet science, etc.

Good morning!

My name is Liz Dengate and I’m the travel coordinator here at the Minnesota Zoo. I’m sending a quick note to all of you because we just opened up registration for a high school trip in August 2015 focused on wildlife and conservation in Costa Rica. The program has a strong focus on wildlife field research, the chance to participate in local conservation issues, and the opportunity to meet and hang out with local high school students, and I think many of your students might be interested in attending and complementing their studies. I’d love it if you could spread the word to your high school classes.

You can find more information at or you can email me or call with any questions. The trip runs from August 1-11, 2015, and will be led by a Zoo naturalist.

Thank you so much and please let me know if you have any questions!

Off to a Great Start!

Another school year and we are off to a great start!  I have to admit, this early start stuff was hard for me to swallow, but now that the first week is done it sure feels good to be back!  Here are some things that are going on in the guidance office:

1) Seniors: Today I am meeting with the entire senior class to help them understand how to read their transcript, give them a timeline of things to do and when during their senior year, how to apply to college and hopefully answer any questions they may have.  A big question I get quite often is applying for scholarships.  I will discuss how to apply for scholarships and where to find them.

2) Juniors: The PSAT test will be offered on October 15th.  I have a list of students that are planning to take this test.  I can increase the number of tests I want to order if I do this by September 15th.  If you would like to take the test and have not yet signed up, see me and I can help with this.  The cost is $14.

Please know if you have questions that my door is always open to you.  Feel free to stop in or if you are a parent and would rather call or email, that works as well.

Changing your Schedule

Hello!  Another school year is soon upon us.  With that comes the need for schedule changes on occasion.  If you need to change your schedule, the two items you will need are a copy of the Master Schedule and the Schedule Change Form.  Please keep in mind that you must have the Schedule Change Form done completely with all signatures and it should be turned in to the box outside of the guidance office any time between now and August 29th.  August 29th is the last day schedule changes can be made.

Things to remember when changing your schedule:
1) Print off the Schedule Change Form
2) Print off a copy of the Master Schedule
3) Fill out the Schedule Change Form completely.
4) Return it to the box outside of the guidance office.
5) All changes must be done by 3pm on August 29th.
6) All new/re-printed schedules can be printed off from StudentVue or ParentVue.  No new schedules will be printed by the guidance office.  You can print these in the HS Media Center.

If you would like to visit about a different issue regarding your schedule, please call me at 320-256-5160, x 1013 to make an appointment before the school year begins or email me at

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Seniors: College Courses Transcript Request

Seniors: You need to request final transcripts from the colleges you received college credits through.  Please do this before May 30th to ensure your college receives the transcripts ASAP.  Please see me with any questions.  If you are attending a college that IS part of the MNSCU public school system (MSU, SCSU, SWMSU, Alex Tech, SCTCC, etc) you do NOT need to request a final college transcript.

If you took: College Chemistry, College Biology, College Anatomy, Psychology, Comp/Lit, College Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, Calculus, and/or College Physics use this form:
M State Fergus Falls Request (you will need to print this and then mail it or return to Ms Dusha by May 30th to fax).

If you took Spanish III/IV, German III/IV, and/or College Economics use this form:
Fond du Lac Request (you will need to print it off, include a check or credit card and mail or fax it yourself).

Again, see me if you have questions.

Are you interested in attending MSU-Moorhead?

If you are, here is some useful information from the Admissions Rep from MSU-Moorhead:

We will also hold a scholarship raffle for students in your neighborhood, and we would love for one of your students to have a chance to be a recipient.

REMINDER: Senior Financial Aid Night

REMINDER: MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! Monday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. there will be a financial aid night held for parents and students at the Gorecki Center on the campus of the College of St Benedict. (This is NOT a College of St Benedict sponsored event - the meeting is just being held there).  You will receive an invitation for this event postmarked from the College of St Benedict, so please watch for your invitation in the mail sometime towards the end of December.

This meeting is very helpful for all students and parents.  They will talk about any changes to financial aid, how to apply, who to go to for extra help, and a question and answer time.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about the meeting.
